About Edgemont Reformed Associate Presbyterian Church
Then & Now
Edgemont Presbyterian Church is a congregation within the Virginia Presbytery of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian (ARP) denomination. Having seceded from the Church of Scotland in the early 1700s, the North America presence of the ARP Church officially formed in 1782 in Philadelphia. Edgemont’s congregation was established in Covington, Virginia in 1931. These origins make the ARP one of the oldest conservative denominations in the United States, and Edgemont Presbyterian Church one of the longest continuous congregations in Covington.
We have been blessed with stability of spiritual leadership. In those 90+ years, Edgemont has installed only 12 pastors, the most recent being Reverend J.K. MacDougall in October 2022. While our heyday of membership is in decades gone by, we are confident that the faithful preaching and application of God’s Word will attract new generations throughout the Allegheny region.
Presently, Edgemont is a small congregation comprising about 50 worshipers each Sunday. Our Men’s Ministry is being revitalized by small weekly Bible Studies and events that offer opportunities to disciple and fellowship, honing one another in God’s Word and experiencing Him in the camaraderie of solid Christian men.
Our Women’s Ministry is vibrant and consists of weekly Bible studies and many wonderful events throughout the year. These offer travel, retreats, joys in the kitchen (crafts and cooking), community assistance, and various celebrations.
Transparently, our Youth Group and related programs have diminished over the years. We would love for your children to participate in our worship services and be blessed in the nurture of the Scriptures. In addition to Edgemont’s sponsoring a Cub Scout Pack that meets weekly at the church, Pastor James organizes Sunday School classes and various activities appropriate for ages of Middle School, High School, and College.
Our worship services are presently held every Sunday morning at 11:00. Nursery and Children’s Church are provided. Service bulletins are archived on this website, but a brief summary is that they last about an hour and focus on worshipping God. Edgemont’s purpose in assembling is to give God praise. We honor Him with our prayers, our singing, our confessions, our giving, and especially by our hearing and receiving of the Word—the Bible—all to God’s glory. Of course, by such, we are refreshed and blessed. The Lord’s Supper is celebrated on the first Sunday of each calendar quarter. This sacrament is freely offered to all attendees who are Christians.
And finally, it is difficult to summarize the full life of the church in this short webpage, but we trust that whatever your spiritual needs are, Edgemont will help you in your walk with Christ as you grow in His nurture and admonition. Whatever your age, we would welcome your contribution to attend our various ministries, being blessed by both your presence and talents, as well as by your friendship in Christ. Thank you for reading this and we look forward to your visit.
